Trail summary: Start at the Wheeler Creek Trailhead; at the Art Nord Trailhead ; or at the Maples Trailhead. The upper (west) section of this trail is also referred to as the Maples Trail. |
Description: The most popular use of the Wheeler Creek Trail will have you start from the Wheeler Creek Trailhead, just below the Pineview Dam into Wheeler Canyon's mouth. From this lower trailhead, it's an easy drift up an old roadbed to the canyon's high mouth where there is another parking lot at the Art Nord Trailhead. You can make a more ambitious use of this trail by forking off the road and following the main flow of Wheeler's Creek to the old Maples Campground. Either way, expect horses and bikes. |
Trailhead location: There are several ways to access the Wheeler Creek Trail:
-Wheeler Creek Trailhead, just west of Pineview Dam and south off State Route 39
-Art Nord Trailhead, about 4 miles up the Old Snowbasin Road (UT 226)
-Maples Trailhead, in the northwest (lowest) corner of the Lower Parking Lot at Snowbasin |
Trail history: Wheeler Creek takes its name from Simon and Levi Wheeler, the first to haul timber out of the canyon and later from the upper basin, which in 1940 was given the name "Snow Basin." |
